No One Knows How to Cancel Recurring Donations to Trump

An odd quirk has cropped up on Donald Trump's campaign website that has some donors seeing red. Mic.com reports there doesn't seem to be a way for people who've set up recurring donations through the site to cancel that running payment. Mic started playing with the donation process after spotting a tweet by CNN political reporter Jeremy Diamond, who posted a screenshot (cc'd to Donald Trump himself) from a donor who'd unsuccessfully tried to cancel his payments to Trump's campaign both online and by leaving voice messages for the campaign. "I thought maybe if you could bring some attention to it, maybe it would suddenly appear on his site," the donor wrote. Mic set up a recurring $1 donation as an experiment and then tried to nix it, but it confirmed what the unnamed donor said: There's no apparent way to cancel, nor a way to delete credit card info from the site.

The only option, in fact, seems to be to "update" one's credit card with a new, valid credit card number (even plugging in a fake number didn't work; the bad number was simply rejected). Mic tried the same thing on Hillary Clinton's donation page and found a button to remove one's credit card—which a campaign rep confirmed would stop all donations. A Federal Election Commission rep says the agency doesn't have any rules that speak directly to this specific issue, so right now, until the Trump campaign answers questions about the dilemma (the Trump campaign hadn't yet responded to Mic's multiple requests for comment), donors who wish to get out of their payments may have limited options: cancel their credit card or fight the charges with their card issuer.
