Clutch Shot Saves Roddick in Sony Opener

Andy Roddick was in big trouble in the opening round of the Sony Ericsson Open today when he pulled off a show-stopping shot to turn the match, reports the Associated Press. Roddick improved to 16-3 on the year with the 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Viktor Troicki in Key Biscayne. The qualifier was serving 4-5 in the final game when Roddick chased down a lob and hit a spinning crosscourt winner to bring the crowd to its feet.

The sixth-seeded Roddick survived five break points in the final set on a day when other seeded players had issues. Five seeded men lost, including No. 21 Lleyton Hewitt, beaten by Jose Acasuso 6-3, 7-6 (4). On the women's side, Lindsay Davenport only lost six service points in beating Camille Pin 6-2, 6-1.
