Maryland-Baltimore County thought it could stay with second-seeded Georgetown by working hard on the glass, just like Pittsburgh did to win the Big East title. The Retrievers found out they weren't the Panthers, however, as the Hoyas out-rebounded them 40-29, held them to 32% shooting, and outscored them 66-47 in their NCAA Tournament first round game, reports the Washington Post.
Georgetown (28-5) used a balanced attack led by seniors Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace, with 13 points each, to methodically wear down the Retrievers (24-9). The Hoyas, who shot 51%, took control in the final seven minutes of the first half by holding UMBC scoreless and without an offensive rebound in building a 31-17 lead. The Retrievers never got closer than 10 after that. (More 2008 NCAA Tournament stories.)
