A newly released video shows two young men joking and laughing as they drive at high speeds through dark country lanes. Then they crash, and their lives are over. Families of the two British friends—Kyle Careford, 20, Michael Owen, 21—have released the footage as a warning to others that drugs and driving don't mix, the Independent reports. "I would like all the young people out there to take notice and realise that you are not invincible and take seriously how precious your lives are to yourselves and others," said Owen's mother, Kat, after an inquest into their deaths, per the Kent Messenger. "I want young drivers to consider how much devastation it causes to the families and loved ones that are left behind."
The video (WARNING: DISTURBING CONTENT) shows Owen telling Careford to "slow down, slow down" and "come on, come on," around the time they reached 90mph in the early hours of April 12, the Mirror reports. Suddenly the camera goes black and a crash can be heard as the car hits a church's stone wall in a Sussex village. Then a woman is heard asking if anyone is alive—but Careford and Owen, who wore seatbelts, both died at the scene. Careford had no car insurance or driver's license, and both had taken "a cocktail of prescribed and illegal drugs," the Independent says. "Despite the pain of it being broadcast by the media, we as a family just hope and pray that this will connect with at least one person out there," says Careford's brother, Zac Hemming. "May we now please let the boys rest in peace?" (More car accident stories.)
