A formerly ambitious Indiana lawmaker resigned to "spend more time with his family" Tuesday, one week after a sexually explicit video was texted from his cellphone, the Indianapolis Star reports. Republican Rep. Jud McMillin sent the following text to his contacts last week after claiming his phone was stolen for 24 hours in Canada: "Please disregard any messages you received recently. I am truly sorry for anything offensive you may have received." The Star is reporting this cryptic message was in response to some sort of adults-only video sent from McMillin's cellphone. It's unclear who sent the video and how many people received it.
In an emailed statement sent out Tuesday, McMillin says, "The time is right for me to pass the torch and spend more time with my family," the Star reports. McMillin was elected in 2010 and quickly rose up the ranks to become majority floor leader. Last year, he tried to require Indiana welfare recipients be tested for drugs, and he cosponsored the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Star reports McMillin is not a stranger to scandal. In 2005, he resigned as assistant county prosecutor in Ohio a week after admitting to having a relationship with the woman from a domestic violence case he was working. In 2013, he was caught pushing for a $600,000 government grant for a company he started and that was being run by his mother and family friends. (More political scandal stories.)
