Clinton Goes After Bush as They Address Same Event

Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush both spoke before the National Urban League in Florida today, and Clinton lit into him surprisingly hard when she went first, reports the New York Times. His super PAC's slogan is "Right to Rise," and Clinton played off theme again and again: “I don’t think you can credibly say that everyone has a right to rise and then say you’re for phasing out Medicare, or repealing ObamaCare," she said. “People can’t rise if they can’t afford health care. They can’t rise if the minimum wage is too low to live on. They can’t rise if their governor makes it harder for them to get a college education. And you can’t seriously talk about the right to rise and support laws that deny the right to vote.” Her remarks drew cheers, and the Times' Michael Barbaro writes that when Bush took the podium after her, "the scent of political gunpowder was still in the air."

His response? He played nice, reports Politico, which says the exchange is illustrative of the campaign so far: "While Clinton often singles out Bush as her No. 1 target to flog on policy issues such as voting rights, women’s rights, entitlements and the economy, Bush’s critiques of Clinton are less pointed," write Annie Karni and Eli Stokols. "When he does go after her, he focuses on her issues of trust, what he characterizes as a do-nothing record as secretary of state, or lightly pokes fun at her campaign’s stilted relationship with the press." On top of that, he might well have gotten booed by today's audience if he attacked.
