Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan announced on Facebook today that they're expecting a baby girl, their first child. The post is more than a mere announcement, however. Zuckerberg reveals that Priscilla has had three miscarriages previously, but "our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful." He says they decided to share that news after hearing about so many other people having miscarriages. He opens up on their own experience: "You feel so hopeful when you learn you're going to have a child. You start imagining who they'll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they're gone. It's a lonely experience."
The struggle is one that our society tends not to outwardly share, but "in today's open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn't distance us; it brings us together," he writes. "It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope. ... We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well." He does squeeze in one quirky revelation: He's sure his daughter takes after him—she "gave me a thumbs up 'like' with her hand" in an ultrasound. Read his full announcement here.
