It is, as the Daily Dot observes, a "twist on the concept of honor killings." In this case out of Turkey, a woman says she killed her abusive ex-husband because he planned to force her into prostitution. Now Cilem Dogan has become a cause célèbre in her home country because of her unrepentant stand. “Will women always die? Let some men die too. I killed him for my honor,” the 28-year-old told police, according to the Hurriyet Daily News. Dogan says she shot her husband with a gun kept under her pillow when he came to her home in Adana and tried to force her to move with him to another city to work as a prostitute. He began beating her when she refused, and that's when she grabbed the gun, Dogan tells police.
Dogan became a media sensation when photographed in handcuffs wearing a shirt with the phrase, “Dear past, thanks for all the lessons. Dear future, I am ready.” At one point, she even flashed a thumb's up to photographers, and supporters have been rallying behind her on social media. The case comes amid a dramatic spike in domestic violence in Turkey—as detailed in this previous piece in Al Jazeera—and Dogan's case has resonated because she says her previous police complaints went nowhere. Though divorced, the couple had remained in contact because they have a daughter. (In Pakistan, a father was sentenced to death for killing his daughter because she married without her family's consent.)
