A Washington state man was arrested by a SWAT team at his home early yesterday for comments he allegedly made on Facebook about Ferguson, Mo. Federal authorities say that over several months, Jaleel Tariq Abdul-Jabbaar made repeated threats to kill Darren Wilson, members of his family, and "anything that has a badge on," NBC reports. The 46-year-old also allegedly tried to buy a gun on Facebook, asking another user if they could "hook a ninja up on the connect." After last month's grand jury decision, he allegedly told the same person it was "Time to kill a cop." Neighbors tell KIRO 7 they know Abdul-Jabbaar as a "real quiet and real nice" guy who never displayed any interest in the Ferguson situation.
Abdul-Jabbaar has been charged with three counts of making interstate threats and faces a maximum sentence of five years on each count. "We are fortunate to live in a country where the right to speak out about current events and disagree with our government is protected by the highest law of the land," a US attorney says in a statement. "Our freedom of speech does not, however, extend to making threats to kill or injure law enforcement officers." Wilson has resigned from the Ferguson force, and his lawyers say that with threats against his life, it's unrealistic to think he could ever work as a police officer again.
