The woman who shot to death the mayor of California's Bell Gardens—her husband—has told police that she did so in order to save her son from a fatal beating, reports the Los Angeles Times. And in a move that could make a conviction on criminal charges difficult, her son is backing up the story. Levette Crespo, 43, says she and husband Daniel were arguing when their 19-year-old son, Daniel Jr., intervened. When the two men began fighting, police say Levette got a gun and shot her husband multiple times.
"Favorable statements from the kid really make building an otherwise un-witnessed case really hard to make," one source tells the newspaper. Daniel Jr. was hospitalized with injuries to his face suffered in the fight. Both he and his mother have been questioned by police, and no charges have been filed. The victim's brother tells KTLA-TV that he spoke to his sibling prior to the shooting and that the couple had been arguing about money. Prosecutors will make the decision on whether to file charges.
