Two websites raising money for the Ferguson police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown abruptly shut down over the weekend after raising more than $430,000. But the Support Officer Darren Wilson and Support Officer Wilson pages, two separate pages on the crowdsourcing site GoFundMe, weren't closed by the site or because of protests—rather, it's because tax lawyers need to figure out how to handle all of the cash that's poured in, a Missouri state rep who's helping with the fundraising tells the LA Times. Though the pages are online, donating is disabled.
Democrat Jeffrey Roorda claims that one of the pages is run by a Missouri teen, though when the Times contacted the anonymous account holder, he/she denied having spoken to Roorda. The second page—which came under fire after ugly comments were posted, according to a writer who took screen shots and sent them to Mother Jones—is managed by Shield of Hope, a charity affiliated with a St. Louis police union of which Roorda is the VP. The Support Darren Wilson Facebook page, which tried to get a petition started against a Michael Brown online fundraiser and which Roorda says is run by a "fellow out of Texas," insists the decision to shut down both GoFundMe pages "was made by those closest to Officer Darren Wilson looking out for his best interest."
