David Brat tells CNN that he needs a few days to "decompress" after his stunning upset of Eric Cantor. "I literally have a thousand emails, a thousand voicemails so I'm just trying to catch up on everything," he says. In the meantime, news outlets continue to ferret information about him via his role as economics professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., and one well-trafficked piece at the New Republic notes that he insisted on a formal dress code for his students. As in, no jeans, flip-flops, or hats.
“It was important to him to make sure that we were business-ready,” says one former student. She adds that "all the girls on campus have a crush on him," while a male student describes him as "suave." Generally speaking, Brat is well-regarded as a teacher—as his reviews at Rate My Professor attest—and a 2004 syllabus for his course on economic justice provides "some clues into the kind of teacher Brat was," observes the New Republic.
