With starting goalie Marty Turco out after suffering a head injury Tuesday, backup Mike Smith was given an opportunity to prove his worth, and did so in fine fashion, leading the Stars to a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota last night. He saved 25 attempts, including one tremendous effort which culminated in Niklas Hagman's lone goal, the Dallas Morning News reports.

"I don't do the splits very often. I'm not sure my groin will like that too much in the morning," said Smith after the game, commenting on his pivotal stop of Marian Gaborik's shot early in the third period. The Stars are on a 5-0 tear since the All-Star break, all of the wins coming on the road. (More NHL stories.)
