Facebook has revealed the most talked-about topics to grace the social network this year, and in the top spot is a perhaps unexpected figure: Pope Francis. The new pontiff beat out the election (No. 2), the royal baby (No. 3), and even Miley Cyrus (No. 7) on the list of global conversation topics; the singer came in ahead of the Boston Marathon (No. 8) but not the Harlem Shake (No. 5). But when looking at just the US, the pope fell to the No. 6 spot. In the top spot was the Super Bowl, followed by the government shutdown—and Miley didn't even make the top 10. Mashable has both top 10 graphics.
Speaking of the pope, Rome's Christmas shopping season apparently "officially kicked off" yesterday, the Huffington Post reports, and he made a trip to the swanky shopping district to pray, out loud, for the poor. It was a church holiday honoring Mary, the Associated Press reports, and Pope Francis prayed in front of a statue of Mary that we might "never be left indifferent to the cries of the poor." More on that here. (More Pope Francis stories.)
