This week's "Modern Love" column in the New York Times is a little different than the norm: It's by Maria Bello, and in it, the actress describes what it was like to come out to her 12-year-old son, Jackson. Bello is currently in a relationship with a woman named Clare, who had already been Bello's best friend for years and "like a godmother to my son" before they decided to become romantic partners. Her son's response upon hearing the news: "Mom, love is love, whatever you are."
Bello describes her "modern family" in the column: Clare is not her only partner, a word Bello finds hard to define. Most nights, she, her son, Clare, and her son's father are having dinner together. She still considers her son's father a partner, as well as her more recent ex-boyfriend. "So I would like to consider myself a 'whatever,' as Jackson said," Bello writes. "Whomever I love, however I love them, whether they sleep in my bed or not, or whether I do homework with them or share a child with them, 'love is love.'" Click for her full column.
