Richard Schaen, 69, was worried about how to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding. Then his spidey senses started tingling. Schaen unearthed his old comic book collection, which had been gathering dust in his Ohio home. Inside, he discovered a copy of Amazing Spider-Man No. 1, which he had bought for 12 cents in 1963. He put the comic up for auction online, and made a cool $7,900 in return, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I gave my daughter a promissory note for the money with a picture of the Spider-Man comic, which we can use to pay for a big part of the catering for her reception," he says.
The big irony is that his daughter's birth was the reason Schaen stopped collecting comics in the first place. They had become too expensive, and he no longer had the time to read them, anyway, he says. Now Schaen is auctioning off more of the comics so he can put a new roof on his house. He just sold his copy of Daredevil No. 1 for $1,600, and next he's selling the first thee issues of The Hulk. (More comics stories.)
