Arnold Schwarzenegger has a pretty good sense of what it's like to be an immigrant to the United States, having yearned to move here as a youth. "The life I have lived was possible only because I immigrated to the one place where nothing is impossible," he writes at Politico. But as governor, Schwarzenegger learned it "was impossible to avoid the reality of our broken immigration system and the impacts of illegal immigration." It's time for action, he writes.
One in 10 California workers is undocumented, Schwarzenegger notes. Our borders face threats of human trafficking, drugs, and terrorism. Meanwhile, we're sending away bright minds who can't get visas. Fortunately, "a brave group of leaders has emerged" in Congress with a bill to address these issues. The Gang of Eight is prepared to "confront the dangers of our border while reminding the world that we are still the shining city on the hill that captured my imagination and harnessed my dreams," he writes.
