A passenger jet with more than 100 people aboard overshot the runway upon landing in Bali today and ended up in the ocean—but everybody on board appears to be safe, reports the BBC. The Lion Air jet, a Boeing 737-800, came to rest in shallow waters off the Indonesian island after trying to land at Ngurah Rai airport, reports Reuters. About two dozen people have been taken to hospitals with injuries, reports AP, though none are thought to be life-threatening.
Lion Air is banned from European Union and US skies because of a spotty safety record, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. Last year, for instance, the Indonesian Transportation Ministry sanctioned the airline because some pilots were found with crystal meth. It's not clear what caused today's mishap, but the SMH says the pilot reported engine trouble just before landing. A total of 101 passengers and seven crew were on board. "All of the passengers were screaming in panic in fear they would drown," says one passenger. "I left behind my belongings and went to an emergency door. I got out of the plane and swam before rescuers jumped in to help me." (More Bali stories.)
