Gun advocates are targeting a New York newspaper's most sensitive spot—its wallet—over the paper's online map of gun owners, Politico reports. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is asking "concerned citizens" nationwide to boycott advertisers of Westchester's Journal News, which sparked an uproar by publishing an interactive map of pistol permit holders in two counties. The map was a "wanton act" that "has put in harm's way tens of thousands of lawful license holders," said the association in a press release.
The group is calling on people to tell the paper's local and national advertisers—such as Best Buy, IKEA, and Target—to stop placing ads until the map is taken down. "State that you will no longer patronize any advertiser" that uses Gannett, the paper's parent company, the group said. "In particular, contact advertisers with whom you already do business, and who may know you personally." The Journal News Media Group, which is planning to add more gun owners to its map, has no comment thus far. (More guns stories.)
