House Republicans appeared to claim a scalp today in their battle over the Fast and Furious case, as Deputy Attorney General Gary Grindler announced his resignation. The administration says Grindler's departure was little more than standard second-term turnover, but Grindler came under harsh criticism in Darrell Issa's investigation, and Issa celebrated the departure as a victory today, Politico reports.

"Gary Grindler was appropriately faulted by his Department’s own Inspector General" for concealing information from his boss and other departments, the House Oversight Committee chairman said. "His departure from the Justice Department is warranted and long overdue." But in his official statement, Eric Holder said only good things about Grindler, thanking him for his "sound advice and personal friendship." (More Justice Department stories.)
