A look at some of the numbers as of this evening on the East Coast regarding superstorm Sandy:

  • Death toll: The AP has it at 40 in the US, with most victims killed by falling trees. That includes at least 12 in New York City, reports the Daily News. (Other wire services have a slightly lower total count.)
  • Power: An estimated 8.2 million people were without electricity in 20 states, reports NBC News.
  • Flights: Sandy has forced the cancellation of 16,000 flights and counting, already more than Hurricane Irene, along with the closure of eight major airports, reports the LA Times.
  • Cost: It's early, but insurers are figuring $20 billion in property damage. The tally for lost business could be even higher.
  • Queens fire: More than 80 homes were destroyed by fire in the Breezy Point neighborhood, reports the New York Times.
  • Subways: It might take another four days to get them running in New York City.
  • Sandy's path: The storm had winds of 45mph at midday when it was about 120 miles east of Pittsburgh. It will weaken (but still bring plenty of wind and rain) as it turns into New York state tonight. More details at the National Hurricane Center.
