Drama at the US Open: Police arrested one of the tennis referees at her Manhattan hotel yesterday, charging her with the April murder of her husband at their California home. Lois Ann Goodman was in New York to work the tournament, and authorities say they would have arrested her at the Open itself if they had to. Goodman, 70, told investigators her husband, Alan Frederick Goodman, fell down the stairs, but they declared the death a homicide due to the sheer amount of blood they found throughout the house.
They searched Goodman's home three times, looking for certain items, and she was present each time. On Aug. 14, police issued a warrant for her arrest. They allege in the criminal complaint that she "personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon(s), to wit, COFFEE CUP" to kill her husband, beating and stabbing him with it. Police think they know a motive, but have not revealed it. Goodman appeared in court wearing blue warm-ups with a US Open logo and chewing gum, the New York Times reports. “Shock is probably my biggest reaction,” says a former umpire. "She’s a very nice woman. A very nice lady." (More Lois Ann Goodman stories.)
