Two young girls in Iowa remain missing, and police have formally reclassified the case as an abduction, reports the Des Moines Register. The move comes after police drained and searched the small lake where the bikes of Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, were found. Family members had pushed for the designation since the girls disappeared on July 13, but authorities said they needed to rule out the lake first.
"We would have wished five days ago that the entire state of Iowa was under surveillance, and they haven’t," says Lyric's mother, Misty Cook-Morrissey. "I mean, someone in seven days could have gone a long way.” She and her husband, Daniel Morrissey, have stopped talking to police, apparently because they feel they're being treated as suspects, reports ABC News. Daniel has two drug-related trials coming up, and Misty has spent time in prison on possession. (More Iowa stories.)
