Donald Trump's claim to be co-hosting a glitzy fundraising dinner with Mitt Romney in New York City tonight apparently came as a surprise to none other than the Romney campaign, the AP reports. Trump tweeted that he was looking forward to the "Dine With Mitt and Donald" event and couldn't wait to meet the "lucky winner" of the "Dine with Donald" contest for which the Romney campaign had been hawking $3 tickets (before Trump again stirred the birther pot). "That won't be happening this week," said a Romney campaign spokesman.

Potentially at issue is a $50,000-a-head fundraiser tonight at the penthouse of New York's Pierre Hotel. Romney will mingle with the 50 or so guests expected, but Trump's name isn't on anywhere on the invitation, notes Maggie Haberman at Politico. Whoever does turn up will be dining in one of America's most expensive homes, notes ABC. The penthouse is the private residence of investor Martin Zweig, and was valued at $70 million when he put it on the market in 2004 before deciding not to sell. (More Mitt Romney stories.)
