A powerful earthquake has struck Papua Island in eastern Indonesia. Local officials say the quake had a magnitude of 6.2, while the US Geological Survey pinpoints it at 5.8. It hit some 11 miles under the earth's surface. No damage or casualties have yet been reported, the AP notes. Earthquakes are fairly commonplace in the country, which sits on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire," an area full of volcanoes and fault lines.
Meanwhile, in eastern Japan, a 5.2 earthquake hit today, shaking Tokyo buildings. No damages or injuries were immediately reported, Reuters notes, nor was a tsunami warning issued. (More Indonesia stories.)
