Las Vegas will create a museum showcasing the Mob's role in turning a tiny desert settlement into America's gambling mecca. The $50 million project is slated to be completed in 2010. "Let's be brutally honest, warts and all. This is more than legend. It's fact," said the mayor. "This is something that differentiates us from other cities."
The museum has even received the endorsement of the FBI, which says you can't tell the stories of mobsters without the stories of the lawmen who chased them. "Despite the sort of edgy theme, this museum will be historically accurate," said the retired agent guiding the project. "The plan is to give people a kind of gritty taste of what it would have been like." (More Las Vegas stories.)
