Christine O'Donnell is decidedly not a witch, and she's now definite on her horse in the GOP's 2012 race: The onetime US Senate hopeful is endorsing Mitt Romney because she trusts him "to do the right thing," she said in her announcement, adding that "America needs a president who is not a Washington Insider." Her support is not all that surprising—Politico notes that she's been leaning Romney's way for a while now—but what is noteworthy is Romney's quick acknowledgment of what could be a controversial endorsement.
"Christine recognizes that excessive government threatens us now and threatens future generations, and I am pleased to have her on my team," Romney said. Writes Maggie Haberman, "I have a hard time seeing Romney, say, stumping actively with her. It seems safe to say this release is a tangible sign of concern within the Romney camp about how to handle the Newt Gingrich surge." The Democratic National Committee appears to concur: The Huffington Post notes that, in a "highly unusual" move, the DNC actually forwarded Romney's press release, "perhaps revealing Democrats' bemusement over the endorsement," writes Amanda Terkel.
