Mayor Michael Bloomberg's rant against Occupy Wall Street protesters was his "Marie Antoinette moment"—like the famous "let them eat cake," it is the kind of comment that "allows us to see under his would-be hip centrist Halloween mask and look closely at the corrupt, arrogant aristocrat underneath," writes Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone. At least commentators like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are "dumb enough" to believe the right's line that government caused the economic crash. "Nobody who actually understands anything about banking, or has spent more than ten minutes inside a Wall Street office, believes any of that crap," writes Taibbi. That includes Bloomberg.
Taibbi also calls out the mayor for being condescending. "People are not protesting for their own entertainment, you asshole," Taibbi says, with typical understatedness. "They’re protesting because millions of people were robbed, by your best friends incidentally, and they want their money back." His full column is here. (More Matt Taibbi stories.)
