If you’re going to retire, there may be no sweeter time to do it than three days after winning the World Series: “I think this just feels like it's time to end it,” said St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa today, as he announced his retirement at a Busch Stadium news conference. “Other than some of the personal attachments, I feel good,” he said. “I feel good that this is the right decision.”
La Russa had also won another St. Louis championship in 2006, and a third in Oakland in 1989. He is third on the all-time wins list, the AP reports. La Russa said today that he started thinking about retiring midway through the season, and informed team officials in late August, back when it appeared the Cardinals were out of wild card contention. He says, however, his decision had nothing to do with the team’s standing at the time. As for what his future holds? He won’t manage again, but he’ll “maybe open a book store,” he said. La Russa will be eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. (More Tony La Russa stories.)
