Lights out at Zuccotti Park: New York officials seized generators and gas canisters from Occupy Wall Street protesters today, the New York Daily News reports. Police and firefighters arrived at the site this morning to ask protesters for the items, citing safety concerns. “They made an announcement on a bullhorn saying: 'We are here to take the generators, could you please bring them up to us on the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street,'” says one protester.
Nobody volunteered, so more than 30 police officers and firefighters entered the encampment. They took five or six generators, one of which ran on used vegetable oil, as well as about a dozen gas canisters. But the Occupiers won’t need electricity for their next event. Today they’ll protest in a decidedly low-tech way: using paper airplanes, Politico reports. OWS members will march to five of Manhattan’s biggest banks for a “throwing event,” using planes made of protest letters. (More Occupy Wall Street stories.)
