Mitt Romney is backpedaling today after right and left slammed his stance—or lack thereof—on union powers in Ohio. Yesterday, Romney told listeners at a GOP phone bank that he was “not speaking about the particular ballot issues” in Ohio, including one that would allow the Republican governor to limit unions’ ability to bargain. Now, Romney says he backs Gov. John Kasich “110 percent,” the Hill reports.

“I fully support Governor Kasich's Question 2 in Ohio,” he said in Virginia. “I'm sorry if I created any confusion there.” The initial remark prompted outrage from the Tea Party—sample tweet: “Do you endorse union tyranny?”—and Democrats. “Romney can’t take back his support of issue 2 simply because he read the results of the Quinnipiac poll this morning,” said Ohio’s Democratic Party chair. Romney had better be careful: The campaign ad season on TV has begun. (More Mitt Romney stories.)
