World / Syria 3 Killed as Hordes March Against Assad Witnesses report seeing the most demonstrations to date By Kate Seamons, Newser Staff Posted Aug 27, 2011 8:55 AM CDT Copied Opponents of President Bashar Assad wave a Syrian flag, during a demonstration against his regime, in Homs, Syria, on Friday Aug. 26, 2011. (AP Photo/Shaam News Network) Yesterday, tens of thousands protested in Syria, and people died. Today, much more of the same. Reuters reports that at least three people are dead after Syrians today marched against President Bashar al-Assad's rule, and witnesses say the number of demonstrations that have erupted since last night in Damascus is the highest since the protests began in March. Reuters reports that two of the dead were felled when Assad's men fired live ammunition into the crowd after al-Qadr prayers—which commemorate the anniversary of the night Muslims believe the Koran's first verses were revealed to the Prophet—wrapped up around dawn. "Some of the 'amn' (security) went on the roof and began firing from their AK-47s to scare the crowd. Around 10 people were wounded, with two hit by bullets in the neck and chest," said a local cleric. (More Syria stories.) Report an error
