Joe Biden is the vice president ... and due to a strange arrangement with the Secret Service, he's also a federal contractor. The Secret Service pays Biden to stay in a rental cottage adjacent to his Delaware home. Since April, Biden has collected $13,000 in rent, and he could make up to $66,000 by the time the contract expires in 2013, the Washington Times reports. Biden is listed as "vendor," not VP, in the federal purchasing documents. Is this a typical arrangement? According to a Secret Service rep, "It’s a rental property so we pay rent there.”

Biden's mother lived in the cottage until her death in January 2010. The Secret Service, which had been renting other properties in the area for agents who provided protection while Biden was in Delaware, declined to rent the cottage at that time, and a private tenant moved in. But when that tenant left nearly a year later, the Secret Service changed its mind and rented the cottage for the same amount—$2,200 per month—the previous tenant had paid. Taxpayer watchdogs find the arrangement odd, especially since Biden has called for more accountability in federal contracts and "shepherded the deficit committee," notes one.
