One of the weirder nuggets to emerge from the behind-the-scenes wrangling on the debt ceiling comes from the Washington Post, which reports that House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy played a clip from a Ben Affleck movie yesterday in a bid to foster unity among his fellow Republicans. In the scene from The Town, Affleck's bank-robber character says to his friend (played by Jeremy Renner): "I need your help. I can’t tell you what it is. You can never ask me about it later. And we're going to hurt some people." Renner's character responds, "Whose car are we gonna take?"
McCarthy was trying to get skeptical House Republicans to rally behind John Boehner's plan, and he apparently won over Tea Party favorite Allen West, who stood up after the clip and said, "I'm ready to drive the car," notes the Post. The liberal Affleck is not pleased. He tells the Huffington Post that he'd prefer Republicans watch one of his other movies, The Company Men, about middle-aged guys getting laid off in the recession.
