A half-million-dollar line of credit apparently wasn't large enough to satisfy the Gingrich family's bling appetite. It turns out Newt and wife Callista had a second line of credit at Tiffany's worth close to $1 million, a spokesman has revealed. The second million-dollar tab was revealed yesterday ahead of the personal financial disclosure statement Gingrich is required to file as a presidential candidate, reports the Washington Post. Callista Gingrich revealed a Tiffany's credit line worth up to $500,000 last month when she filed her own financial disclosure.
Details on what the money was used for have not been released. All bills were paid, and the credit line has been closed, said Gingrich's spokesman. The austerity-pushing candidate came under fire when the family's first Tiffany tab was revealed. He expressed surprise that the media and public cared. "We happen to be successful," Gingrich said by way of explanation for the mammoth bill. Concerns were also raised about possible influence peddling by Tiffany's via interest-free credit at a time when Callista Gingrich was chief clerk for the House Agriculture Committee helping to determine federal mining decisions vitally important to the jewelry company.
