Joan Walsh writes that she used to dismiss the idea of a Michele Bachmann presidential run as laughable. But after watching the GOP's 2012 follies of late—especially you, Newt—she's changing her tune a little. "As the likely GOP contenders engage in a race to the moral, intellectual, and political bottom, Bachmann's not really worse than the rest of them," Walsh writes at Salon. She may be a "far-right demagogue," but at least she's honest about it.
Romney, Pawlenty, and Daniels are busy "running to the right" and reeling in their centrist views on everything from health care to climate change. "These guys know better, and they're acting like craven know-nothings; maybe it's an advantage to be the person in the race who isn't acting." Walsh still thinks most GOP voters would ultimately "reject Bachmann's divisive and uninformed political appeal. But since no Republican seems ready to test my hypothesis, Bachmann may as well go for it and be herself." (Bachmann is asking supporters who want her to run to pony up $50.)
