Authorities searching a San Diego County home have discovered the largest cache of two kinds of homemade explosives ever found in the US—and they have plenty of searching left to do, reports CNN. The resident, unemployed software engineer George Jakubec, has been charged with two bank robberies and bomb making. As much as 9 pounds of an explosive powder favored by suicide bombers has been recovered from the house; other explosives found are too volatile to be immediately removed.
Jakubec, a Serbian national who is a naturalized US citizen, was arrested after a gardener was injured when he unwittingly set off some of the explosive powder in the backyard. Explosives experts are studying video of the cramped, cluttered interior of Jakubec's home to determine how to proceed with the search and to spot any potential booby traps. "We have a saying: 'We'll go as fast as we can but slow as we must,'" said a law enforcement official. (More San Diego stories.)
